Vintage Illustrations

Pip from Meet Me At Mikes has a great little idea about sharing pics from old picture books.

I am doing this, and hoping to do a couple a week. I love the detail in children's book illustrations, and have memories of Shirley Hughes, Quentin Blake, and the Ameliaranne series, all of which I enjoyed as a little girl.

Helpers by Shirley Hughes is a really gorgeous book. The houses are messy and lived-in, and the kids play imaginatively. Some of her characters, Lucy and Tom, and My Naughty Little Sister are fondly remembered. I'm sure the books are still at Mum and Dad's place.

But before all this, pre-1974 is the challenge. Ameliaranne is from the 1930s, so let's start with her.....

I love her night-dress, and hair in rags, and the 'garden clothes' of the kids. I need to work on my scanning techniques....

oh how lovely! What a gorgeous idea. Quentin Blake was a big one for me, too. Must dig up some others.

First time I've heard of Ameliaranne...she is a treat. I'm always interested in the outfits in vintage illustrations too.
