I had a discussion with a friend today about Tetra Paks. I have been oblivious to the fact that a) they are made off shore, are then imported to Australia and then sold, and b) are NOT recycled in 90% of recycling depots in Australia! The packaging SAYS recyclable, as it theoretically is, however there is ONE recycling plant in Australia which has the facilities to do so, and most ends up as landfill. Due to the many layers of wax-lined cardboard and aluminium used in their construction, they won't break down.
This got us thinking...
How can we recycle juice packs, Tetra paks, etc? Yes, they are good for planting things in, if you stab some draining holes in the bottom, but what else??
We are looking for directions for making bags out of them, as they are waterproof, but also have insulating properties. This is great for eco-bags for supermarket shopping, picnics, etc. I also thought they would be good as lining for nappy-change mats, craft mats for playdough, painting, etc, and mats for sitting on at the park, on damp grass, etc.
Any other ideas?
When we have used the many tetra paks we have in the pantry, I will post some pics of what I've made. In the meantime, my shopping habits have changed. Rather than emergency milk in the pantry, a good old tin of the powder is just as easy and cheaper :)
In the meantime, there are juice pouch crafts and ideas at mormonchic.com.

Using it as a lining is a great idea! That's a hell of a lot of possibilities just there. What about as a lunch bag? That would be cool too.
Thanks for this post Jess.
